What is the BEST thread for sewing Sunbrella fabric for a boat cover / Bimini top?
Hello Mr. Couch,
Bar none the best thread is Gortex lifetime thread.
It comes in many brands , but my current favoriate is Solarfix.
Others are Tenara and Solar thread.
Gortex threads are not always able to sew on home sewing machines.
They are very expensive, but are worth the money.
If your not using lifetime thread, then the next best thing is Polester UV thread 138. Sunguard, Sunstop, Ultradee, Nubond are a few. The 138 is usually too large to sew with home sewing machines. If using a home sewing machine, then try 92.
You can expect up to 3-5 years for the 138 in the South and 1-3 years for the 92.
Is there a brand of polyester that is better than another. I use Sunguard currently, but I don't think there is much difference in the brands of marine threads.
I hope this helps,
Tammy
