Comments for As far as binding , is it appropriate to bind any canvas with suede , it looks great and is so flexible but I only see fabricators use it in abrasive areas. Why?

Really great boat cover material question!
by: Tammy

Yes, so leather is used for high chafe areas and can provide an excellent deterrent to abrasion. Areas where rope or shrouds come through are appealing areas. Fabricators use it in all types of places.
However, like life, you get some great benefits, but there are issues with using leather.

Over time, exposed to the elements it will harden, shrink and crack. It will also become unsightly as it changes.

I personally tend to use more as a thin binding instead of a Sunbrella binding if I feel the area is under an abrasion candidate.
That way I can protect the raw edge of the fabric, but don’t have too much visible of the aging leather to see from the outside. Other fabricators will use it for a variety of chafe patches, even going so far as using it on the aft handrail chafe patch on sailboat dodgers. I personally do not care for that. Looks terrible as it ages, shrinks and cracks.

So use it for sure, but be careful where it goes.
Good luck.
